Transporting & Storing Cakes Safely, My Top Tips.
For anyone who has already transported a bespoke cake they will know it is a nerve-wracking experience, but with the right tips you can ensure it arrives at its destination in perfect condition.
Once your cake leaves my hands it becomes your responsibility, so it is important to know how to look after it. Below are some essential guidelines to follow for safe travel and storage.
Communication
Whether you are collecting your cake from me in Monton, Manchester or having it delivered it is always good to speak with me regarding specific travel and storage recommendations for your cake design.
Carrying Cakes
All my cakes are carefully packaged in sturdy, appropriately sized cake box to prevent any sliding mishaps.
When it comes to carrying your cake hold the box flat by its bottom, do not rest the box against your body or push the sides inward. Mishandling the box in this way could potentially damage the cake's design.
Wedding & Celebration Cake Delivery
Before arriving to collect the cake, make sure your car's air conditioning is on high so the cake is not being exposed to excessive heat.
Place the cake flat on the floor of the passengers footwell, or in the boot. You can use a non-slip mat or a grippy material at the base of the box to prevent it from slipping around while driving. Do not placing it on the seat, as the surface might be uneven and lead to the cake tipping over. Drive carefully and do not brake suddenly or fly round sharp corners.
Storing Cakes
Cakes should be collected on the day they are to be eaten or the day before. Once your wedding or celebration cake delivery has been completed you need to make sure to store it correctly. For some cakes, the fridge is the best place to store them and will keep it fresh until the time you are ready to present it. However, some cakes such as fondant-covered ones must not be put in the fridge as it will melt the fondant compromising the design & structure. Fondant cakes can be kept in a cool, shaded spot in your house.
Presentation
Avoid exposing the cake to any direct sunlight or heat sources.
Make sure that the table or surface you are presenting your cake on is level and won’t be knocked easily by passers-by. If you are using a cake stand, make sure that it is strong enough to hold the weight of your cake.
Cutting the Cake
If the weather is particularly warm and your cake is suitable to be put in the fridge, it's worth letting it firm up slightly by placing it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 1 hour. This will help the slices hold their shape beautifully.
When it's time to cut the cake, use a sharp knife to ensure clean cuts without damaging the cake's structure. I will provide you with cutting guides to help you get the right number of slices out of your cake.
Once the cake is cut, you can keep any leftover slices and store them in an airtight container. These slices will stay fresh and can be enjoyed over the next few days. Please note that, unless otherwise stated, my cakes are not suitable for freezing.
